Who is Pahnl ?

Pahnl, are a street art duo who encourage miniature people, dogs, cats and birds to live out on the street. Their miniature graffiti art figures are 10cm tall and can get up to all sorts of mischief on the streets all around the world. Pahnl take a great deal of influence from comics and street signage – adding their own subversive twist.

Pahnl are based in Birmingham and have been making their graffiti art since 2006, “we use stencils, stickers, posters, animation, screen printing, sculpture, film and photography to bring our small world to life”.

Sometimes Pahnl’s art hits the street in sticker form. This graffiti art is often used to change street signage in a playful way by adding custom made stickers or by the use of stencils. Each stencil is made from acetate sheet better known as overhead projector film transparency. Once the image has been printed on to the acetate it is carefully cut out using a Stanley knife. This Stencil is held in place and the image formed by spray paint. This technique of stencil art lends itself perfectly to these small figures and they can be produced very quickly out on the street.

As well as “street bothering” Pahnl are also screen print artists. Screen printing lends itself perfectly to Pahnl’s art characters and the use of vibrant colours that the duo often employ.

How do you pronounce your name?
The same way you'd say panel.

What does 'Pahnl' mean?
“We took the word 'panel' as in 'comic panel' and misspelt it to change it from a noun to a name. You could say we see surfaces and spots in the street as panels to drop our characters into but that might be romanticizing the process a little too much”.
